Unzip the files and you'll have a project folder (which will have sub-folders), that is what you select when you open a project in Unity. There is no single "project file" that you open, instead you select the project folder and away you go!

The basic idea behind occlusion culling is the same whether your level is outdoors or inside of a room. The key is to make sure that your viewing areas cover everywhere that your camera can go. However, you generally will get more bang for your buck inside of rooms because your character is surrounded by walls which occlude objects. If your scene is outdoors and there are large rocks or cliffs acting as occluders then occlusion culling can still be valuable, but if your entire level is one flat plane then occlusion culling isn't going to help you at all.

Both resources are great, but the video is too short.
What about the open scenes? All the examples of occlusion culling are in rooms

You're right... I didn't understand it correctly. You can ignore the last 2 out of three comments in my first post.

I'm not sure I follow. There is a FPS_Tutorial.zip, which are the source files you need to do the tutorial yourself and a FPS_Tutorial_Completed.zip, which is a completed version of the tutorial.

thanks the new *completed.zip is better now, however for a newbie it's still unclear why there are two fps_tutorial*.zip files and which zip file is for what version of Unity. See my post above.

Okay, so I've just renamed the file altogether to get around the delay in this getting propagated through our CDN. If the file on the fps tutorial page does not say "FPS_Tutorial_Completed.zip", then you need to refresh your page.

I've updated the link on our site to use the new file, however, there still seems to be some problem with our content delivery network (CDN) still serving up the old file in parts. I'll post again when we've resolved this issue.

Just my 2 cents:
-what's up with the "FPS Tutorial Assets 2" folder inside "Completed FPS Tutorial.zip"?
-is it correct that "FPS_Tutorial.zip" is for Unity 1.x and "Completed FPS Tutorial.zip" is for Unity 2.x? In that case maybe it's better to rename the two zips with a suffix which version of Unity it is for.
-inside the pdf's there's a link to www.otee.dk/tutorials/fps_assets.zip
I guess the assets in that package are still for the old version of Unity 1.x right?

Special shout out to Jeff for his very cool, video tutorial breakdown of the Occlusion Culling project for iPhone. Five minute in and out, and his cadence and speaking style were exactly right. THIS is exactly what the hordes are looking for... A quick, to the point single topic vid. Bravo! and look forward to as many as you guys can pump out.

Props to the Unity Demo Team. The goods are coming and the promise of the best documentation in the industry is well underway.

best,
B.
