A bright future for PlayStation deployment with Engine Room Games

As you may know, Unity began life as a Mac and then mobile-centric game engine. Indeed, it wasn’t until Unity 3.4 (released on July 27, 2011) that Unity provided a build option for PS3, with Rochard, the first PlayStation title to be made with Unity, released shortly thereafter.

Since that day, Unity’s PlayStation development has come a long way, and, judging by the hundreds of games in development and the many games that have already shipped, Unity is now a hugely popular development environment for PlayStation developers.

The team who’ve made such a huge difference to Unity’s PlayStation deployment, is UK-based Engine Room Games: a team with more than 20 years’ experience in the games industry and an enviable list of credits .

Since early 2013, Engine Room Games have contracted with Unity, but we’ve recently been fortunate enough to be able to persuade the team to join us on a permanent basis. This makes us happy, because it means that the future of Unity PlayStation development is in very good hands.

The Engine Room Games team will also contribute to other areas of Unity development including particles and general optimization. At the minute they’re working on expanding Unity support for PlayStation®VR, including 3D audio and Social Screen.

As well as being a testament to how easy it is to make great PlayStation games with Unity, the Unity engine’s popularity amongst PlayStation developers is also, in no small part, down to our partnership with the good people at Sony Computer Entertainment, who’ve made Unity Pro available free of charge to certified PlayStation developers.

What today’s PlayStation developers are making with Unity is of the highest quality. In fact, many of the most impressive PS4 titles are now made with Unity including Bafta winner Never Alone, the hilarious Stick It To The Man and Just Add Water’s fantastic reboot of Oddworld. Many other great titles are in development including Bartlet Jones’ Drawn To Death and Capcom’s Resident Evil Umbrella Corps.

    Unity Still able to export to PS Vita?

      Of course! We currently support PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation 4 (including PlayStation VR).

    Excellent. I’ve talked a couple of times over email/forums with those guys and they are great. PS4 could not be in better hands.

    Are there any specific plans connected with particles?

      Hi. If you look at the Roadmap you will see that there are particle related updates coming up. Some will be in 5.3

        Indeed, take a look at the roadmap. 5.2 contained a bunch of particle bugfies, and both 5.3 and 5.4 will have quite a lot of improvements (scripting API, custom pivots, 2D collision, etc.)
