New Unity Educators Live sessions announced: How emerging tech is transforming learning

At the start of September Unity launched Educators Live, which saw educators from around the world virtually gather to join the conversation around preparing students for high-demand technology jobs. These free live learning sessions will continue to run until December 1, bringing together thought leaders from education and industry for honest conversations about the challenges ahead

Among other topics, the sessions cover issues around teaching emerging subjects like extended reality (XR) and new media, helpful pedagogical approaches, and potential scenarios for these technologies to solve real-world problems. Education professionals from all levels and at every stage of their career can engage with their peers and with Unity experts to discover actionable learning, inspiration, and insights.

October 27: Empowering the Diverse Creators of the Future 

The world is a better place with more creators in it, and it’s even better when the creators are a diverse lot of storytellers, interactive experience designers and programmers. When you bring real-time 3D development into your classroom, you have the opportunity to expand, develop and broaden the diversity of creators. This session focuses on strategies and resources to help you do that. 

Clorama Dorvilias is an interaction designer who has been researching and developing applied virtual reality (VR) experiences exploring bias and empathy since 2014 for various industry sectors. Joining her in this panel discussion will be Elizabeth LaPensée, an award-winning designer, writer, artist, and researcher who creates and studies Indigenous-led media, and Azine Davoudzadeh, a high school educator focused on how VR affects the career choices of girls. 

November 10: Projects with Purpose 

Students engage better with educational material when it’s meaningful to them, and when they have the opportunity to devise solutions to real-world problems that touch them personally. Real-time 3D has the power to tackle previously unsolvable problems. Learn how educators might facilitate these types of projects and how to increase learner motivation by encouraging a sense of responsibility and ownership in the classroom. 

You’ll hear from futurist Cathy Hackl, who specializes in the impact of emerging technologies on communications and business, and educator and creator Kwaku Aning, who spearheads project-based learning that uses robotics, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, and projection mapping. 

Joining them is Jeremy Nelson, Director of the Extended Reality (XR) Initiative, who works to strengthen education through interdisciplinary XR communities of practice, and Arana Shapiro, a specialist in education and nonprofit management who currently serves as the Managing Director of Games for Change

December 1: Teaching XR Development with Unity 

In our final session of the series, you’ll discover some of the opportunities for students of XR development and learn about strategies and resources to support them from experts in the field. The skills to develop XR experiences open up a world of possibilities for students across a range of industries and applications.

You’ll hear from these inspiring educators: Khoi Le is a recent grad who helped grow the Stanford XR club from 12 students in a basement to a massive club with programs touching hundreds of students and faculty across the university, notably CS11: How to Make VR, a student-led course that teaches the basics of creating and designing XR applications. Elizabeth Nguyen is currently a student, president of Stanford XR, and recent intern at Unity. Sean Wybrant teaches computer science, video game design, and interactive technologies and supports students to create impactful project-based learning experiences in XR. Emilie Joly cofounded apelab, developer of Zoe, a learning platform built on Unity that connects students and teachers to create interactive 3D worlds from anywhere.
