The range of impressive projects developed with real-time 3D technology can make the creation process seem daunting, but no one should be intimidated. Our recent webinar assembled a panel of developers, designers and executives to share how their companies quickly and economically created immersive, interactive 3D experiences from design files for virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) devices.

Engineering News-Record (ENR) recently teamed up with Unity to host a webinar, “Creating Real-Time 3D Experiences for AEC: It's Simpler Than You May Think.” The webinar featured real-world examples and insights from leaders across architecture, engineering & construction (AEC), including Will Adams, emerging technologies developer, virtual insights at Mortenson; Anthony John Cortez, senior designer, experiential, lighting, visualization at Arup; and Chris Mayer, executive vice president and chief innovation officer at Suffolk.

Couldn’t make the live showing of the webinar? We’ve got you covered — you can watch it on demand now. It’s chock-full of insights about:

  • How AEC industry leaders are incorporating real-time 3D into how they design, build, sell, and operate buildings and infrastructure
  • The myriad ways AEC firms iterate faster, collaborate better, and easily simulate complex environments with immersive 3D experiences
  • Innovative uses of AR and VR across a wide range of use cases, from design visualization to safety and training

Key takeaways

Don’t have time to watch all 60 minutes of the webinar? Here are three key takeaways:

Real-time 3D enhances the entire design, build and operate lifecycle. Every constituent in the AEC ecosystem benefits from real-time 3D. The panelists demonstrated how this technology helps architects bring BIM models to life to win more bids, engineering teams prototype large complicated structures to identify clashes and security flaws, and construction companies engage with clients to experience an immersive VR environment before it exists.

Real-time 3D drives meaningful business outcomes. Anthony from Arup shared how the creation of physical mock-ups can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, yet making changes is highly cumbersome. Virtual models cost a fraction in comparison and unlock the ability to iterate immediately while exploring the built environment in an immersive way. Will from Mortenson echoed this point, sharing how AR and VR experiences are pivotal to the firm’s ability to engage key client decision-makers and gain their confidence. Learn how Mortenson uses Unity to improve building design and construction for hospitals and hotels, universities, and property developers.

Incorporating real-time 3D into your organization is easier than you think. In a poll, approximately half of webinar attendees shared that they do not have in-house AR/VR teams. But that doesn’t have to be a barrier to adopting real-time 3D. Chris shared how Suffolk has leveraged a network of partners to rapidly scale its ability to build these interactive, immersive VR experiences.
