While the FPS tutorial is version 1.x Unity content, it still has a little life left in it for getting you started off building your own FPS. The tutorial is newly formatted and updated to work with Unity 2.x:

If you’ve yet to grok how to set up occlusion culling for your iPhone game, then check out a new video tutorial that Jeff made:

Unzip the files and you’ll have a project folder (which will have sub-folders), that is what you select when you open a project in Unity. There is no single «project file» that you open, instead you select the project folder and away you go!

The basic idea behind occlusion culling is the same whether your level is outdoors or inside of a room. The key is to make sure that your viewing areas cover everywhere that your camera can go. However, you generally will get more bang for your buck inside of rooms because your character is surrounded by walls which occlude objects. If your scene is outdoors and there are large rocks or cliffs acting as occluders then occlusion culling can still be valuable, but if your entire level is one flat plane then occlusion culling isn’t going to help you at all.

Both resources are great, but the video is too short.
What about the open scenes? All the examples of occlusion culling are in rooms

You’re right… I didn’t understand it correctly. You can ignore the last 2 out of three comments in my first post.

thanks the new * is better now, however for a newbie it’s still unclear why there are two fps_tutorial*.zip files and which zip file is for what version of Unity. See my post above.

Just my 2 cents:
-what’s up with the «FPS Tutorial Assets 2» folder inside «Completed FPS»?
-is it correct that «» is for Unity 1.x and «Completed FPS» is for Unity 2.x? In that case maybe it’s better to rename the two zips with a suffix which version of Unity it is for.
-inside the pdf’s there’s a link to
I guess the assets in that package are still for the old version of Unity 1.x right?

Special shout out to Jeff for his very cool, video tutorial breakdown of the Occlusion Culling project for iPhone. Five minute in and out, and his cadence and speaking style were exactly right. THIS is exactly what the hordes are looking for… A quick, to the point single topic vid. Bravo! and look forward to as many as you guys can pump out.

Props to the Unity Demo Team. The goods are coming and the promise of the best documentation in the industry is well underway.
