Today at Microsoft’s annual Build conference, a strategic partnership was announced between Unity and Microsoft. That means support for their rather badass upcoming Xbox One and much more.

I’m also happy to say that the Windows Store Pro publishing add-on will be free when released (soon). So all current and future Unity Pro 4 customers stand to get $3000 worth of tech at half price!

You’ll be able to port your games, ads, training and educational apps―any kind of Unity-authored content―to both the Windows Store Apps and Windows Phone 8 platforms with a Unity Pro 4 license.

If that news isn’t thrilling enough, we also announced that we’re collaborating with Microsoft to develop tools for the Xbox One entertainment system, including support for many next-generation features like enhanced Kinect gestures and recognition, multiplayer matchmaking, SmartGlass and cloud stuff.

Oh, and developers who build games published by Microsoft Studios get the tools for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One free of charge.

Microsoft is a wealthy underdog in several markets, in particular phones and tablets. This seems like a good move on their part to try to drive some more content onto their devices, and hopefully will drive Google and Apple to strike some deals of their own with Unity. So far, though, I don’t think they feel enough competitive pressure.

Great !
Still … the third paragraph in the blog only talks about Windows Store Pro and later on mentions Windows Store Apps and Windows Phone 8 (without any Pro) in the same sentence, so the wording is a little bit ambiguous. But of course – as you can confirme, i’m just more than happy ;-)

Can you really confirm that the PRO version of Windows Phone 8 will be free for Unity Pro users ?
This would be different to the other phone licensing models, where you only get the basic version of the module for free. Needless to say that i would be pleased to hear that this is the case…

This is really awesome news – especially for Microsoft because they’ll be getting a lot of awesome Unity Pro developers into their eco-system. But I also really like that I don’t have to get «YAPA» (Yet Another Pro Addon) because updating Pro + iOS Pro + Android Pro already is kind of steep (and especially with Android, I always wonder if it’s worth the money ;-) ).

Now … if we could only finally get our hands on the new GUI system, life would be perfect ;-)

Basic Windows Phone 8 publishing will be free for everyone, as announced earlier.

Great move for everyone =)
I was outspoken at various places about clever platform holders best doing a coop with UT to work out a deal where Unity Pro users would get publishing options to that platform holder’s platform(s) without additional license cost to the content creators to get more unity content onto their platforms and someone at MS or UT did the good move to listen or think the same. Congrats =)

@JIM PERRY: RENE is correct, you do not have to be published by Microsoft to use Unity for Xbox One. However you jget the tools for free if you ARE published by Microsoft. You can still use the tools to develop for the console. But as Rene says, there is currently no self-publishing for Xbox One so you’ll need to find A publishing somewhere to get on the system.

i’ll be waiting for some sort of partnership with sony for ps4, microsoft isn’t particularly awesome for the indie dev community, it’s sad how they actually do a good job at giving devs the tools and then shaft them on the publishing side of things

@JIM PERRY: Microsoft does not allow any self publishing on XBox One at all. This has nothing to do with Unity, it’s Microsoft who made that decision.

Disappointed that this deal seems to leave out the basement type indies. From the comments that were made, it seems you have to have a deal with MS Studios to get on Xbox One, even when using Unity. This seems strange to me given the Unity has been a mainly indie level tool.

There was a vague «stay tuned» addendum that hinted that we indies might be allowed to get on the console somehow, but how long will we have to wait. It would be great to have a ton of indie games ready for launch or soon after, but we’d have to be working now to be ready.

W8 and WP8 add-ons free for Unity (as well as BlackBerry add-on) – basic add-ons for basic Unity
W8 Pro and WP8 Pro add-ons free for Unity Pro license owners (BlackBerry Pro add-on will be paid)
