Unity is honored to be recognized by Fast Company as one of the top innovators in VR and AR. We’ve been a long-standing champion for the VR/AR industry, and it’s gratifying that our commitment to this space is being acknowledged. This recognition reflects the hard work of so many people within Unity. We wouldn’t be where we are today without our employees who work tirelessly to make our immersive dreams a reality!

The new computing paradigm, powered by real-time 3D

Unity believes that virtual and augmented reality represent the future of computing. In the real world, we move, think and experience in three dimensions. Now, it’s time for our computers to work the way we do: with natural interfaces based on real-time 3D that inform, delight, educate, and make us more productive. Unity is at the center of this coming transformation, helping developers and artists worldwide take the best advantage of this immersive medium so they can create amazing content.

Unity’s technology was forged in gaming, the industry with the most exacting requirements for running real-time 3D on a range of hardware from consoles to smartphones. Over the course of more than a decade, our development platform has expanded beyond content creation to encompass deployment, live operations, and a monetization suite that includes in-app-purchase and ads, powered by sophisticated machine learning.

In the last few years, we have applied this same relentless focus on democratizing 3D development, solving hard problems, and enabling our customers’ success to VR and AR. We invested heavily in supporting the major VR and AR hardware and software platforms, and as a result of these efforts, we’re proud to say that more than 60% of the worlds VR and AR content is made with Unity! And VR and AR are impacting many new industries beyond gaming: from designing cars and training surgeons, to delivering novel forms of entertainment, or creating new ways to market and sell to customers, Unity’s developers are at the forefront of a transformation that will change the face of computing forever.

SPHERES: Songs of Spacetime

We’re so excited  about what’s to come. Here are just a few of the exciting things happening in VR and AR that bode well for the future of immersive computing.

  • The virtual reality pieces shown at Sundance New Frontier, 70% of which were made with Unity, represent the first crop of content designed natively for VR that stand on their own. No longer experiments in how to tell a story, or demos of how to work some new piece of hardware, these experiences stand on their own as great content developed for a new medium. Beyond the artistic advances, we saw a significant commercial development take place: two unprecedented six-figure distribution deals were announced during Sundance, the Made With Unity VR pieces SPHERES and Zikr: A Sufi Revival. We are thrilled for the creators and excited for what this means for the future of cinematic VR.
  • The industry continues to invest in VR hardware, software and services. 2017 saw a year-over-year increase in VR venture funding. The major manufacturers of VR hardware have announced a new generation of products, including untethered “standalone” devices (no phone required), lower price points, and inside-out positional tracking systems that don’t require setting up extra sensors around the room. These more affordable, more user-friendly devices will hit the market in 2018 and are sure to foster even greater adoption.
  • Enterprises are moving from proof of concept to deployment this year. Major manufacturers in automotive and other sectors are embracing Unity to change business processes, train workers, and market and sell their products. Global consultancies like Deloitte and Accenture are developing practices to serve the growing demand for VR and AR applications in the enterprise.
  • As if all this wasn’t amazing enough, we are looking forward to AR hitting massive scale in 2018. With the introduction of Apple’s ARKit and Google’s ARCore, phone-based augmented reality is poised to reach nearly a billion people this year. We’ve seen the first experiences land, including Transformers: Cade’s Junkyard and IKEA’s Place app. These are a glimpse of how AR is going to change gaming, retail, brand marketing and more.
