The Installer Scene is a good place to start, as it’s lightweight and friendly, but any package from OTOY’s storefront will install OctaneRender. Once you are prompted to install OctaneRender for Unity, check out the Octane for Unity installation guide for the step-by-step process.

OctaneRender® Prime, Studio, and Creator

OctaneRender for Unity comes in three versions — a free tier and two subscription options — each of which is feature complete.

  • OctaneRender Prime is available for free when you download an OctaneRender asset from the Asset Store. Prime only allows access to your primary GPU and comes with no additional plugins.
  • Annual subscriptions to OctaneRender Studio and OctaneRender Creator offer access to more GPUs and a selection of additional plugins.
    • OctaneRender Studio is $20 per month and allows access to 2 GPUs and a selection of 1 additional plugin.
    • OctaneRender Creator is $60 per month and allows access to up to 20 GPUs and a selection of 3 additional plugins
    • Both OctaneRender Studio and Creator also include OctaneRender for NUKE and for After Effects as standard plugins. Simply follow the instructions emailed after loading OctaneRender Studio or Creator to redeem and download while selecting your additional plugins.

  1. I keep reading announcements like this, and going to the otoy website, and I still have no idea what octane render *actually* does. Everything is pure marketing speak.

    Is this an alternative to enlighten for baking lightmaps? Is this a rendering pipeline that replaces unity’s in built players? Is this just a big suite of shaders? Why is it so difficult to find out what octane fir unity actually does?

    Isn’t working on latest Unity. Tried reportinig on otoy forums along with someone else with the same problem and it seems all messages have to go via moderators. Submitted a message 5 days ago and it still hasn’t been approved. Seems like a pretty dire afair.

  3. I don’t have an Nvidia GPU but that’s one hell of a Unity spacecraft in that image!

  4. I feel like the post implies that the output of baking lighting with Octane would be the same as Unity’s lightmapping system, but following the videos provided it looks like it just creates a new texture with the lighting baked in.

    Am I missing something or is this the case?

      Octane 3.08 (just hit RC2, so final soon) supports light direction and irradiance AOVs in baking that match what Unity light mapper expects. With Octane 4 you’ll get real time updates in the scene as well as AI light and AI denoiser in baking system.

  5. Unity is working on their own GPU lightmapper, but Octane is meant to be used to record high quality cinematic videos, so I don’t think that’ll affect it much. Plus, as a lightmapper, some people might prefer one or the other for personal reasons.

  6. Is this the GPU lightmapper shown at GDC this week?

    1. Nope. The GDC lightmapper is based on Radeon Rays from AMD, and is expected to work the same as the built in PLM.

        Hi all – during my GDC Unity presentations yesterday, I gave two deep dive talks on Octane 4 Unity integration which covers a ton of stuff on the short and mid term roadmap once V4 is released to all Unity users. I am hoping the videos are posted soon. The general takeaway is that Unity + Octane 4 (with AI light+AI spectral denoiser) gets us the core pieces we need to achieve real time path tracing (not just ray tracing reflections) on the high end (possibly even high end mobile on iOS), with light field baking/streaming covering the rest of the spectrum or mixed together.
