Search Unity

We’ve been talking about new forum software in the works for a while now, this may have seemed like forever ago, but the time has now come to make the switch!

A little background info for those who may have missed these discussions on the forums, we’re currently running on a heavily customised version of vBulletin, it’s kinda buggy, terrible at managing spam and we can’t upgrade or modify it without breaking everything. At some point last year our web developers and I decided it would benefit everyone to make a change to new software that wasn’t such a pain to manage. We evaluated a tonne of software and settled on XenForo, it’s been in development for some time and on Monday the 2nd of June, we will say goodbye to buggy ‘ol VB.

Here’s a little bit of what it looks like:

The new forums have some pretty wicked features like thread previews, conversational style private messaging and it’s mobile friendly.

On Monday the forums will go into maintenance mode for around 10 hours starting from 6am UTC (providing everything goes smoothly), all your old posts, threads & messages will be migrated to the new forums. When we go live we recommend you check your forum account settings as they may have changed slightly and your subscription notifications may also be different.

Nothing in this world is perfect, this goes triple for software, while we have been testing for a while, we may have missed things and I expect there to be some kinks in the beginning. I will post a forum thread in Announcements (link pending the upgrade) where you can discuss the changes but we would like anyone who finds a bug to e-mail support at unity3d dot com starting the subject line with “Forum bug”

We’ll be updating our social media sites when the new forums are up so follow us on twitter @Unity3d Google+ or like our Facebook page

Hey there, I think your site might be having browser compatibility issues.
When I look at your blog site in Opera, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping.

I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Other then that, very
good blog!

my blog … best toners for skin

We absolutely love your blog and find almost all of your post’s to be just what
I’m looking for. Do you offer guest writers to write content for yourself?

I wouldn’t mind creating a post or elaborating on a number of the
subjects you write regarding here. Again, awesome weblog!

I see that you have disabled the ability to add images into signatures so I have removed the image from my signature for fairness :)

There’s a problem with the new forums. When I attempt to search on my phone by tapping the search area my keyboard flashes up for a second disappears and the search box vanishes. BTW if its any help I’m using Google chrome on a nexus 4 kit kat

I’ve long waited and told for new Unity forums. Alas, this is a good surprize!
Well done (or to be doen ;) )

Wow, great news – looking forward to try your new forums. Hope there’s be less bugs and easier management, but in any case, your forums are really interesting and helpful, and it is the most important feature for all developers.

These are great news, I appreciate it.
I hope that will fix some nasty bugs, like sometimes not being able to edit threads, because the previous text is missing, or the not working horizontal line…

How is the new text formation, is it compatible with the previous formated text?

Did you think about integrating Unity-Answers/StackOverflow-like features for self-moderating? The Forum is a great resource, but it’s content is highly unstructured and uncurated. Allowing direct comments to a single post instead of putting all into the thread makes the thread leaner and the option to up/downvote a post with some kind of limited forum-currency increases the quality of the visible content / hides low-quality content. The Forum and the Answers section have a lot of overlap…

Not at I’ll publish anytime soon but in the same way I think the Asset Store should be an all around Kiosk (buy, support, email, review, forum on site for each Kiosk owner) it would be nice if Unity users could set up a Portfolio under Showcase and/or Collaboration. Or maybe more sensibly when you click on a user name that’s where the portfolio and then create a User Portfolio Galleries of various types. Maybe the forum software can allow the use to create new mini forums in there portfolio section? Or per portfolio piece? With Admin right to delete / moderate / ban users in their portfolio section? (you know how forums can get).

I know that is a lot of storage and I don’t know how that is charged to places like Unity. To use it’s like with Microsoft, Apple, Google, Dropbox, and all the various free web sites it’s seems cheaper than it actually is…

At any rate, the Unity Portfolio site can just have Web templates that hook into the free storage places. A bit like has free web sites that can hook into for the pictures (but more of a portfolio layout).

A portfolio section will make the forums better and the community better because then a member can build a portfolio for quality and their reputation is right there. They can create user tutorials in their Portfolio sections and really good ones can be PD’ed and featured into the guest Unity Learn site. Quality work and quality advice scrolls away down the threads with time. With current forums it’s now much more than even with the enhancements.

It’s about time :)
I am really loving how active you’ve been on the blog and forum these days. Keep it up!
Faith in Unity restored. <3

Looks good. And certainly looks like an improvement over the current forums. (You have my sympathies regarding the spam issue. I used to handle forums for a games developer until a couple of years ago, so I feel your pain!)
