Unity’s success is grounded in its employees. We’re growing rapidly and hiring globally. Read on to learn about our hiring process and what we’re looking for in a candidate.

We want to make sure we grow the right way. As much as who we hire, how we hire defines our future success. We believe a good employee-employer relationship is based on transparency, and that starts before you’re even hired. If you’re interested in a career at Unity, we want to set you up with the best chance to succeed.

In this blog post we’ll cover what our typical hiring process at Unity looks like, how we interview for our core values, and some tips on answering interview questions.

Hiring stages

Our Recruiting team has developed a hiring and interview process that is aligned across our global offices, right down to the questions we ask.

Overview of the interview process, from recruiter phone screen to hiring manager review/screen to skills assessment to onsite meeting.
A high-level overview of our hiring process

Recruiter phone screen

Whether you have applied through our Careers site or we have approached you, your journey as a candidate starts with an application review. If your experience looks like a good fit for the role we want to fill, a member of our Recruitment team will invite you for a phone interview.

What can you expect? This is typically a 30-minute informal phone call that lets us find out a bit more about you, tell you more about Unity and about the opportunity, and answer any initial questions you may have.

Hiring manager review/screen

If a candidate appears to be a good fit, the recruiter presents them to the hiring manager. Should the hiring manager agree, our Recruitment Operations team will be in touch to schedule the next step of the hiring manager screen.

What can you expect? This is usually a 30–60 minute phone or video call where the hiring manager delves further into your relevant experience. They will ask you behavioral questions and answer any role-specific questions you have.

Skills assessment

After the hiring manager screen, we assess the skills relevant to the job.

What can you expect? It’s not just technical roles that require a skills assessment; depending on the role, we may assess a variety of soft skills too, including writing and communication skills.

“Onsite” meeting

If you pass the skills assessment, we’ll invite you to meet more of the team. This is the final stage of the process.

What can you expect? We’ll send you the agenda beforehand so you know who you’re meeting and how long it will take. Your onsite meeting will normally take place over video and include questions that assess whether your values align with how we work at Unity (more on this below).

How we interview

At Unity, we use structured interviewing. This interview style means that we ask the same questions to every candidate interviewing for the same role. We use structured interviewing as it minimizes biases and ensures we’re assessing candidates against the role and not against one another.

An interview at Unity consists of mainly behavioral skills-based questions. We use these questions to assess both your suitability to the position that you’re interviewing for and your fit with our values and culture.

We believe we can learn more about you based on your past experience than from theoretical questions. You can expect questions to start with some of the following:

  • “Tell me about a time when…”
  • “Give an example of when…”
  • “Describe a situation where…”

We’re not here to trick you or trip you up, and our interviewers have been trained to support you in answering the questions.

Top Tip: Use the STAR method when answering behavioral, skills-based questions (STAR equals Situation, Task, Action, Result).

What’s important to us

Our values are at the heart of what we do. They’re important to us, and we want them to be important to you too. During the onsite stage we look for how you embody and act on these principles by asking you specific behavioral skills-based questions on our values.

Users first

We put users first. Our shared dedication to users holds us together, defines and aligns our work, and drives us to deliver for them.

We look for candidates who:

  • Successfully build relationships with colleagues and users
  • Listen by engaging and understanding different perspectives

Best ideas win

We believe great ideas can come from anywhere. We have vigorous debates, we listen and learn, and we make sure the best ideas win. We care enough to go through the pain of messy conversations.

We look for candidates who:

  • Are open and respectful to other ideas and input

In it together

We are Citizens of Unity. We act like owners. We’re activists; we have a voice and use it. We’re direct and candid, with good intent. We respect each other’s uniqueness and we’re in it together.

We look for candidates who:

  • Effectively communicate with team members
  • Are open to giving, seeking, and receiving feedback

Go bold

We do bold things. We go big and when we fail, we learn, get better, and go big again. We challenge and elevate each other beyond our limits to do what may seem impossible. We stay curious and hungry.

We look for candidates who:

  • Are curious and like to solve problems
  • Challenge the status quo and take calculated risks

To give you some insight into how we explore these skills, here are example interview questions for each value.

How we live our values: ERO

At Unity, we believe that the world is a better place with more creators in it. One of the most effective ways to support creators is by having a workforce that appreciates and reflects the diversity of our current and future creator universe. We anchor our approach to Inclusion in a commitment to Empathy, Respect, and Opportunity (ERO).

Empathy is necessary to validate the perspectives of others. It is the capacity to feel what another person is experiencing by putting yourself in their position.

Respect is a recognition of dignity. It is about treating others how they want to be treated, which compels us to ask how they feel most valued.

Opportunity is a guarantee that individuals are treated equitably, free from artificial barriers, prejudices, or preferences.

Throughout your interview process, we want to ensure we’re demonstrating ERO to you and considering your connection to Unity’s culture of an inclusive workplace grounded in these values.
