In 2019, the need for software engineers in the AR, VR and gaming industries saw massive growth, with demand for AR and VR engineers growing 1,400% and gaming engineers 146%. As the world’s leading platform for creating and operating interactive, real-time 3D content, Unity and those with Unity skills play an integral role in bringing these experiences to life. With surging demand in these industries, people with Unity skills are more coveted than ever, making this an opportune time to build and advance your Unity skills.

One way you can do this is through our Unity Learn platform, which hosts more than 750 hours of premium on-demand and live learning content, including the popular Create with Code Live series to help people start learning how to code. We recently made all of this content free and accessible to everyone to support your learning and development, especially given the rapidly changing economic landscape brought about by COVID-19 and the need for people to develop in-demand skills like Unity.

Complement your project portfolio and prove your skills

Demonstrating tangible skills and competencies to employers is important to advance your career, and there are several ways to do so. One of the most important ways is to develop a robust portfolio of projects that showcases your best work and is hosted somewhere that’s easily accessible to anyone, like GitHub or a personal site (you can use a website builder like WordPress). This gives employers insight into what you’re capable of creating with preparation and time, and at what level. However, it doesn’t give employers a complete picture of the breadth and depth of your knowledge or versatility. This is where a certification can complement your portfolio by helping you showcase that you have skills and expertise that go beyond a few portfolio pieces, and that you’re invested in your learning and professional development.

Unity Certifications are divided into four different levels: User, Associate, Professional and Expert. Each certification was developed in collaboration with industry experts and subject matter specialists, then rigorously tested to ensure that they meet the highest standards of exam quality and reliability in assessing abilities.

The User-level certifications are designed for high school students following a Unity curriculum, or adult beginners who’ve learned Unity on their own. The User: Programmer certification tests that you have foundational skills in Unity and C# programming, and if you aspire to create AR and VR experiences, the new User: VR Developer exam tests that you have the foundational knowledge to begin creating these experiences with Unity. Both certifications are a great way to validate that you’ve acquired essential Unity skills and are on the right path to learning and development.

Once you’ve used these skills to develop portfolio pieces, passing the Associate-level certification signals to potential employers that you’ve gained the foundational and intermediate-level skills to tackle a professional role, helping you stand out in a pool of applicants.

Learning and developing your Unity skills is a career-long journey that will only be accelerated once you’re employed. The Professional- and Expert-level exams were designed to help you encourage, gauge, and validate your skill progression. Most of these exams have Courseware, robust learning materials that teach you advanced Unity skills and serve as a refresher, and practice exams to help you prepare for these challenging exams that certify that you have the breadth and depth to be considered among the top Unity experts.

Because we’re constantly working to ensure that these exams are aligned with industry and professional standards, we recently reworked and relaunched our Expert: Programmer exam after hearing constructive feedback from our community. This new exam is industry-agnostic and developed in partnership with seasoned professionals who’ve worked hard to identify the myriad skills and competencies that you must possess to be considered elite Unity talent.
